Bwengu Extension Planning Area (EPA) in Mzimba has urged people to utilise vast tranches of wetland and dambos to venture in fish farming.

Speaking on Friday during a two-day training on basic fish pond construction techniques, Bwengu agriculture development coordinator Christopher Kanyika said food production was declining due to poor soil fertility.

“Therefore, farmers have to embrace all forms of farming to remain food secure and self-reliant,” he said.

Kanyika: Bwengu has perennial rivers

Kanyika bemoaned that most areas situated in the Viphya highlands under Bwengu EPA are endowed with perennial rivers and good soils for agricultural production and fish pond but remain under-utilised.

“Farmers have to embrace technical skills on how to construct ponds to raise fish,” he said.

Group village head Chotha Tembo commended Mzimba Fisheries Office for organising the training.

“I will encourage my subjects to venture in fish farming because cattle farming is facing numerous challenges,” he said.

The training attracted 24 farming households, including village heads from five villages around Chiotha-Tembo Catchment in Traditional Authority Mtwalo.

Each household is expected to construct a fish pond which is to receive equipment and fingerling support from Climate Resilience in Malawi Project being implemented in Inkosi Kampingo Sibande and Mtwalo in the district with funding from the Government of Flanders.
